Find Bargains at Book Sale and View Planets at Library Center
Sunday is the final day of the annual Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale, and “Bag Day.” That’s when you pay just $1 for everything you can jam into a bag.
Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. at Remington’s, 1655 W. Republic Road.
The sale began for the public on Tuesday, April 27, but not to worry. The Friends started with three semi-tractor trailer loads of books, CDs, DVDs and other materials, so there’s still a great selection of books for all ages and tastes.
The Friends of the Library use the book sale proceeds for programs and grants for the 10 libraries and bookmobile. Every library user benefits from those grants because they fund the Summer Reading Program for kids and teens, the bookmobile, live music concerts and cultural events such as the recent successful chautauqua at the Library Center. Without the Friends’ hard work and book sale support from the community, we wouldn’t have such a strong, vibrant library district.
Next up: the Friends’ Fall Book Sale Oct. 19-24 at Remington’s.
If you’re interested in donating books for the fall sale, deliver them to any branch in the Springfield-Greene County Library District. Friends volunteers will soon begin sorting, pricing and organizing donations. If you’d like to join Friends and be part of the team, call 883-5366, or contact any branch library for details.

Coming Tuesday, May 4, the public is invited to a planetary viewing at 8:30 p.m. on the south lawn of the Library Center.
Weather permitting, the Springfield Astronomical Society will set up telescopes to view Venus, Mars and Saturn, which are well-positioned for public viewing, says the group’s president, Dale Flippo.
Venus will show phases like Earth’s moon and Mars will reveal its red disc.
“Saturn is probably the best to view because you can see the rings and a couple of its moons,” Flippo says.

“Space exploration starts with getting out and enjoying the skies at night,” Flippo says.
If you’re interested in learning more after Tuesday’s event, attend one of the society’s meetings at 7-8:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Library Center.
