California Emigration

Emigration from Southwest Missouri to California was reported in the Springfield (Mo.) Mirror May 29, 1856, page 1 [Reprinted from the Osceola Independent]

California Emigration
"The emigration to California this spring from South-West Missouri is much larger than it has been for some five years.  From this county forty persons have left for the Eldorado, and we learn a number of companies from Polk County, taking with them a large number of cattle. We are informed that P.H. Clark and Wm. S. Toller go out with 520 head of cattle, and the company is composed of eighteen emigrants. Jack Redman and Lunsford take out 400 head cattle, the Messrs Devin & Co., 70 head of cattle; Dr. Mathews, 100 head, and Henry Vann, 100 head, in all from Polk County the number of emigrants can be put down at over fifty, and the number of cattle that are taken by these various companies over 1500. From Cedar and other counties, we learn the emigration has been proportionally as large. Osceola Independent"
