How Does your Genealogy Software Rank?

Many genealogists tend to be collectors and thus accumulate file cabinets filled with thousand of pages of information. One of the most important and sometimes difficult aspects of genealogy is organization. When folders and paper charts begin to overwhelm and frustrate, genealogy software can help organize data, keep lists, and even weed out duplication.

But which genealogy program is the best one? Website TopTenREVIEWS is a good place to start. Its Genealogy Software Review 2010 report compares the most popular software and includes links to view screen shots. All of the programs import and export gedcom files, so it should be easy to switch to another program if your current software lacks features and you decide to upgrade.

Among the top six genealogy software programs, only Family Tree Maker does not offer a free download or 30-60 day free trial. RootsMagic4 and Legacy  allow you to download and use a basic version to see if it suits you. Ancestral Quest, Family Historian, and The Master Genealogist offer free trials.
