Research in Tennessee History to Get a Big Boost
The University of Tennessee at Knoxville recently announced that they have received a grant of $325,165 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize 100,000 pages of historical Tennessee newspapers. The university will work with the Tennessee State Library and Archives in the digitization project.
The Tennessee State Library and Archives collects and preserves books and records of historical, documentary, and reference value and promotes library and archival development throughout the state. The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent federal agency which supports learning in history, literature, philosophy and other areas of the humanities.
Historical digitized newspapers will span the years 1836-1922 and thus will include many pivotal events both in the history of Tennessee and of the United States. Among these events are slavery, civil war battles, and the Scopes "Monkey" Trial.
An advisory group of genealogists, educators, researchers and citizens from across the state will select newspapers for the project. The newspapers will first appear in "Chronicling America" and later will be available through the University of Tennessee Knoxville library website.
