Kick Off Independence Day at Library Center

You’re invited to kick off your Independence Day weekend on Friday, July 2, with a concert of patriotic music and a family picnic at the Library Center.

The Springfield Brass Choir will perform favorites that honor the United States, from “The Star-Spangled Banner” to “Fanfare for the Common Man.”

The concert begins at 6 p.m. on the patio.

You’re welcome to bring your own picnic, or order one ahead from the Mudhouse, 889-6938. The library will provide iced tea and lemonade. In case of rain, we’ll move indoors.

The 17-member group is made up of professional brass players – musicians and music educators from Drury, Evangel, Missouri State and Southwest Baptist universities and area public schools. Many of them are former members of the elite Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps bands.

The Springfield Brass Choir is sponsored by Hoover Music Co., and is under the direction of Christopher Lair, an instructor in the music departments of Missouri State University and Evangel University.

Self-service just went high-tech at the Library Station and Library Center. With the swipe of a library card and touch-screen technology, customers can check out books or materials, review the materials already checked out or “on hold” and review and pay their fines.

The new stations are in the children’s department and main checkout areas of both branches. They came through a grant from the Library Services and Technology Act Federal Grant program, administered through the Missouri State Library.

Self-checkout machines purchased under a different fund area also located at the Republic Branch and Park Central Branch libraries.
