Memories Come Easier With the Help of Bi-Folkal Program Kits
Remembering any time or topic is easier when you can see a picture
of your memories, or if you can touch, hear or smell them. When
memories are shared in a group, each person’s experiences can
add to a deeper understanding of our past -- and perhaps our future.
Bring back old memories and create new ones with Bi-Folkal Program
Kits, available to check out from any Springfield-Greene County
Library. Designed especially for older adults, each evocative kit
centers on a time or topic that has touched most seniors’ lives.
These kits are ideal to use as presentations at senior centers,
churches and clubs.
The multi-sensory kit pieces focus on themes including school
days, fairs, farms, pets, automobiles and the decades of the 20th
century. Each kit contains a variety of materials; you can choose
something for one short program -- or use it all for a whole series
of programs. You can adapt the pieces to make the program just right
for your group or use the same kit over and over for an always-new
discussion.
What’s In the Bag?
- Audiovisual presentation - in slide/tape or VHS video or both.
- Manual - a how-to-do-it guide with instructions on how to get
a program going, a list of questions that will stimulate discussion,
resources and ideas for related activities.
- Audiocassettes - offer vocal and piano accompaniment for sing-along
songs. You’ll never be singing alone. Plus stories, mood
music or radio shows.
- Booklets - sing-along songs, poetry, photographs and other discussion-starters
are all printed in large type.
- Skits or jokes - add a touch of humor to a program. Offer another
way to involve participants and prompt discussion.
- Things to touch - shapes and textures spark memories and encourage
stories from older adults. (Some of these may be mystery items
for younger people.)
