The Master Gardeners Program is a public service program offered by the Cooperative Extension Service. The Program provides university training to volunteers for the purpose of enabling them to serve their communities through horticulture, gardening, and pest management. Master Gardeners promote and raise public awareness of the University of Missouri Extension as a source of unbiased, research-based gardening information.
In 2014, Master Gardeners of Greene County is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
Master Gardeners answer over 2000 home garden "hotline" questions each year. The Hotline is staffed Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., from March - October. Call, e-mail, or stop by to ask your home gardening questions. Bring in your diseased branch, leaf or pest to get it identified for free by certified volunteer Master Gardeners.
Ask about Potting Shed University, a series of 10 gardening programs that are offered to the public on Monday evenings in March and April.
Master Gardeners of Greene County developed an original demonstration garden in 1994 on land provided by the Springfield-Greene County Park Board. Since then it has become an award-winning demonstration garden located at 2400 South Scenic in Springfield. It includes vegetables, herbs, wildflowers, grasses, trees and shrubs. A xeriscape garden located at South National and Linwood (south of the Springfield Art Museum) is also maintained by the Master Gardeners.
The annual plant sale began in 1998 and is always held on the last Saturday in April at 7:30 a.m., rain or shine.
Call or check the website to learn about upcoming programs.
