Income Tax Information & Forms

The Springfield-Greene County Library system provides Missouri and Federal tax forms during filing season as a service to the community. Staff members can direct you to paper copies, Internet resources, and reproducible forms and publications. Staff cannot help you prepare your taxes or tell you which form you need. We can direct you to information that will help you decide what you need and to local groups that provide assistance with filling out your forms. This Web page provides useful links and answers to frequently asked questions.

Frequently requested Federal & Missouri Tax forms for the current tax year are available at all branches of the Springfield-Greene County Library. There is no charge for paper forms provided to the Library by the IRS and Missouri Department of Revenue. Reproducible forms can be accessed on the IRS and MODOR web sites directly. If printed at the Library there is a charge of 10 cents per page.

Springfield Post Offices do not carry tax forms.

You may obtain federal tax forms and publications at the local IRS office at:

Hours are: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Closed for lunch 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The local office does not provide telephone service.

Taxpayers may ask tax questions by calling the toll-free customer service line at 1-800-829-1040.

You may have the IRS fax forms to you by dialing this number from your fax machine: 1-703-368-9694 (Not a toll-free number). Follow the voice prompts.

You may call the IRS to request forms at 1-800-829-3676.

By mail, Missouri residents may request forms and publications from the nearest IRS Distribution Center. Allow 10 days for delivery.

You may print forms (or fill out electronically) at the Missouri Department of Revenue web site.

What forms do you supply at the Library?

Each branch orders its own supplies of tax forms. We attempt to supply the most frequently requested forms. Forms are free to the public. We do not maintain inventory sufficient to supply bulk or multiple-copy requests. When supplies are exhausted, copies can be made at the Library for 10 cents per page using IRS or MODOR web sites or the IRS reproducible book.

Where can I obtain older tax forms?

Older federal tax forms back to 1990 can be found at the IRS Web Site

Older Missouri tax forms for individuals are available at the Missouri Department of Revenue web site back to 1995.

Where can I get out-of-state tax forms?

Out-of-state tax forms are not supplied locally. You may print copies from other state Department of Revenues from the following web site:

You may also call or contact the Department of Revenue for a specific state. The Library can supply you with an address and phone number for out of state offices. Call our Reference Department at 883-5341, or your local branch library for more information.

Can I file my forms electronically at the Library?

The Library does not provide proprietary software to help you prepare your taxes. However, the IRS E-File Web site will guide you to free and low-cost Internet filing opportunities. The Missouri Department of Revenue provides electronic filing through their MO E-file. Library staff can direct you to these sites but cannot help you prepare your taxes or give you guidance in using these electronic forms.

What is the deadline to file my taxes?

In 2008, Missouri taxpayers will have a deadline of April 15, 2008 for both federal and state income tax. You may obtain an extension by filling out a form. However, even if you get an extension, the tax you owe is still due April 15.

For Missouri, you may file form MO-60 for an individual income tax return extension. The Library carries this form or may print it out from the web.

For federal taxes, you may file form 4868 for an individual income tax return extension. The Library carries copies of this form or you may print it out from the web.


My Missouri tax form asks me for my Missouri School District Number. What is it?

The School District Number for Springfield, R12 is 475.

The School District Number for other Greene County school districts:

Where can I obtain help in preparing my taxes?

Library staff cannot give you advice or help you prepare your taxes.

At the Library

Missouri State University students working with the ATLS coalition will offer free federal and state tax return preparation and electronic filing and Missouri property tax credit and federal telephone excise tax refund preparation for those of low-to-moderate income including those with disabilities, non-English speakers and the elderly.

The service is funded by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

At Drury University (from the Drury University Web Site)

Drury University accounting students will operate an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site and provide free tax assistance.

This service, targeted toward low-income and senior-citizen taxpayers, is free. To expedite the filing process, taxpayers should bring all W-2s, 1099s, Social Security cards of dependents and a copy of their previous year's return with them to the site. The VITA site is located on both the first and second floors in the Breech School of Business Administration at the corner of Central Street and Drury Lane on Drury University's campus. It will be open the following dates and times:

The tax service is walk-in only, no appointments are needed. With the generous co-sponsorship by Great Southern, Mid-Missouri Bank, and the Ministers Coalition of Springfield, we are able to provide information and incentives for clients to maximize their tax deductions, credits and refunds and move toward improving their personal finances through savings and investment.

All returns will be filed electronically, unless a manual return is required by the IRS. All taxpayers must be available to sign the appropriate forms in the case of joint returns. Taxpayers seeking assistance may call 873-7508 for directions and a schedule.

How do I check on the status of my refund from my federal return

Refund information can be requested at Where's My Refund? on the IRS web site. The following information is required to obtain the status of your Federal refund:

  1. the first social security number on the return
  2. the filing status shown on your return
  3. the exact amount of the refund in whole dollars

The Missouri Department of Revenue web site offers a Return Inquiry System. The following information is required to obtain the status of your Missouri refund:

  1. the first social security number on the return
  2. the filing status shown on your return
  3. the exact amount of the refund in whole dollars

How do I file for the stimulus payment/rebate offered this year?

According to the IRS,

“Most taxpayers do not need to take any extra steps to receive the payment beginning in early May.

But there are some exceptions.

Individuals who might not otherwise be required to file a 2007 tax return will need to file a return this year to receive the stimulus payment. The return must show at least $3,000 in qualifying income.”

Can I still file for the 2006 Telephone Tax Refund?

After I filed my 2006 return, I discovered that I qualify for the telephone tax refund. Can I still request the refund?

Yes. You can get it by filing an amended return using Form 1040X. Request the telephone tax refund by filling out Line 15 on this form. Fill out the rest of this form using the instructions for Form 1040X. If you choose to base your request on the actual amount of tax paid (rather than using the standard amount), also fill out and attach Form 8913.
