What role did Springfield and Greene County play in the Spanish-American War?

Companies “K” and “M” of the 2nd Missouri Infantry, Missouri National Guard, served in the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Springfield companies never left the country, spending the duration of the war at Camp Thomas, a training camp located on the Civil War Battlefield at Chickamauga, Georgia.

Fairbanks and Tuck’s "Past and Present of Greene Co., Missouri" contains an account of the Springfield companies' service by Captain Ernest C. MacAfee of Springfield. Of particular interest on pp. 404-408 is a roster of men who served in Companies “K” and “M”.

The "Report of the Adjutant General 1897-1898" also gives an account of Springfield’s residents in the Spanish-American War.

Besides the Springfield companies, a number of Ozarks communities provided companies in the 2nd Missouri, including Carthage, Joplin and Pierce City.
