Was there a bell tower on the Springfield Public Square?

A bell tower stood on the Springfield Public Square from 1871 to 1879.  The wooden bell tower and bandstand were built in the center of the Square. The bell was rung when there was a fire to alert the volunteer fire department.

See the Springfield Republican, March 9, 1924, p. B3, for a picture of the tower and a caption. A photo of the bell tower can be found in the Information File “SPRINGFIELD, MO. – PUBLIC SQUARE” in the Local History and Geneaology Deparment at the Library Center.
