How do I research my Native American ancestor?

The State Historical Society of Missouri maintains an excellent web site about Native American Genealogical Resources. The web site contains many links to various Indian tribal government sites and genealogical information.

For those researching Cherokee ancestors, the Genealogy page on the official site of the Cherokee Nation may provide answers. The Cherokee Heritage Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, also has a detailed web site about Cherokee genealogy.

A private web site, All Things Cherokee, also manages a genealogy page with many links.

In addition, the Local History and Genealogy Department maintains a large collection of Native American genealogical materials, especially those Indian tribes in the Ozarks. The Department also has a handout about Native American Genealogy for interested researchers.
