The Geronimo Stilton series originated in Italy and has become the most popular children's book series in that country. It has been published in the United States since 2004. While the series credits its title character as the author, the idea originated with Elisabetta Dami, daughter of an Italian publisher. She developed the likeable mouse character while entertaining sick children in her youth. Ms. Dami divides her time between Italy and Sedona, Arizona.

There are currently over 100 Geronimo Stilton books. The first book in the most recent "series within the series", Cavemice: The Stone of Fire was released in January, 2013.
