A temporary, full-time early literacy outreach assistant position is available at the Library Center, although this assistant will work primarily at the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clinic located at 440 E. Tampa St. (Jordan Valley Health Center) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, to provide children’s storytimes and early literacy training to parents and caregivers visiting the clinic. This position will also require occasional visits to WIC satellite clinics in Springfield, Republic and Willard, for which the employee may be reimbursed mileage. As a condition of employment, work schedules may change as necessary to best provide user services and to meet the Library’s responsibility to the citizens of Greene County.
This position is scheduled for approximately 40 hours per week, pays $12.44 per hour and will be posted until the application deadline of November 13. It is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. It is anticipated that the project will be funded for one year.
Essential Functions
- Establish effective working relationships with grant partners.
- Coordinate arrangements for services and programs at the WIC clinics and other locations.
- Plan, conduct and evaluate storytimes to model effective reading practices and age appropriate book choices. Plan, conduct and evaluate early literacy workshops and events for parents and their preschoolers, to help them gain skills needed to prepare their children to learn to read.
- Help maintain Shady Dell library, conduct trainings and events for families.
- Coordinate schedules and tasks for project Library staff working at WIC and other sites.
- Provide early literacy training and guidance to Library staff & volunteers who work at WIC
- Complete and review project reports and statistics and implement revisions when necessary
- Seek out opportunities to reach other at-risk audiences, develop relationships with agencies serving high-risk populations
- Assist with parenting reference questions, maintain and enhance WIC learning lab materials
- Work closely with WIC, Shady Dell and other site staff to build relationships that will ensure project success
- Assist with the organization and structure of the grant project to ensure documentation of results.
- Ability to relate to children, primarily birth through five, their parents and work with the general public: It is essential that individuals who work in this position have the ability to work and interact in a cooperative, pleasant, and constructive manner with others and encourage and nurture positive relationships between children, their families, the Library, and the grant partners.
- Timeliness: Early Literacy Outreach Associates must be punctual and timely in arriving to work and completing tasks. An Early Literacy Outreach Associate must also be capable of working all of the hours in their assigned shift.
Education/Experience
- BA/BS Degree in a related field.
- One year public service experience.
- Experience working with children.
- One year library experience is preferred

- Ability to relate knowledge of children’s developmental needs and stages to children’s resources, programs and services.
- Demonstrates artistic and creative ability in the production of children's programming and display.
- Working knowledge of children's ready reference tools and children's collection.
- Ability to interact pleasantly, constructively and cooperatively with library patrons, outreach site clients and staff.
- Excellent communications skills, oral and written.
- Ability to effectively listen to and respond to patron inquiries.
- Demonstrates organizational skills in the areas of department management, program planning and preparation of reports.
- Computer and keyboard skills, to include windows, word-processing and spreadsheet construction.

Supervision
- Supervised by Youth Services Coordinator.
Physical Demands
- Performs bending, squatting, kneeling and reaching from floor level to 6 feet in height.
- Displays good coordination and mobility.
- Routine lifting of library materials weighing up to 20 lbs.
Working Environment
- Primarily indoors with heating and cooling regulated in a general library environment.
Miscellaneous Requirements
- Must be pass a security background check.
- Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance on vehicle.
