"Summer Reading to Go" Temporary Outreach Youth Assistant

A part-time "Summer Reading to Go" Temporary Outreach Youth Assistant position is available in the Outreach Services Department at the Library Center. This is a grant-funded, part-time, temporary position. Applicants must be available to work Monday through Friday, primarily days, and one evening per week required during the summer. This position will work approximately 22 hours per week March 17-Aug. 1, 2014. As a condition of employment, work schedules may change as necessary to best provide user services and to meet the Library’s responsibility to the citizens of Greene County. This position also requires a source of reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and proof of vehicle insurance, as daily use of a personal vehicle is necessary. Mileage reimbursement will be provided. The position pays $9.45 per hour and will be posted until the application deadline of March 5.

Essential Functions

  • Timeliness: Since adherence to a strict schedule is mandatory, the Youth Assistant must be prompt and timely in arriving to work and completing tasks.
  • Plans and implements children's story times and other summer reading program activities for children at day-camps, summer school programs, and assists with programs for all ages at other off-site locations.
  • Assists in preparing program materials that will be used during the summer.
  • Ability to work with elementary-age children and their childcare providers, as well as with teens and adults, in a cooperative, pleasant and constructive manner.
  • Performs computer data searches, data entry, word-processing, spreadsheet construction, basic file-keeping and clerical activities.
  • Completes reports and correspondence as requested.

Education/Experience

  • Minimum 60 college credit hours in a related field.
  • Experience working with elementary-age children. 

Skills/Job Knowledge

  • Excellent communications skills, oral and written.
  • Demonstrates artistic and creative ability in the production of children's programming.
  • Working knowledge of children's literature and age appropriate materials.

Supervision

  • Supervised by Outreach Services Manager.

Physical Demands

  • Performs bending, squatting, kneeling and reaching from floor level to 6 feet in height.
  • Displays good coordination and mobility.
  • Routine lifting of library materials weighing up to 35 lbs.
  • Indoor and outdoor work environments.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a security background check
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and proof of insurance on vehicle.

Education and experience will be evaluated with regard to quantity, recency and quality.
