Black Families: Pages 418 & 1936 Directory 1-6

"NEGRO CITY AND COUNTY DIRECTORY"

1936

This historic booklet, from the days of segregation, is a great aid as a genealogical tool. It not only provides resource material for black genealogy in Greene County, but for Jasper County as well. There was a connection between families of both counties once again proving that family research does not stop at any particular county line.

Names found in the World War I Honor Roll of Greene County book can be traced further through this directory. Many early family names of Greene County also are listed. Mrs. James M. Graham and Mrs. Elaine Graham Estes have pointed out many including Adams, Bedell, Berry, Burns, Campbell, Canafax, Danforth, Fulbright, Herndon, Johnson, McFarland, Patterson, Rose, Steele, Yancy, and Young. Other names listed in the directory may trace ancestry back to the earliest settlement of Greene County. These names are Abernathy, Dillard, Freeman, Jarrett, Morrow, Mitchell, Majors, Price, Thompson, Vaughn, Wallace, and Yoakum.

Another part of the Directory lists teachers. There are also business listings.
