1956

THE OBSERVATION DOME SLEEPER: The principle of an upper deck observatory level in railroad cars first filled a practical need on frieght train cabooses before it was adapted to passenger cars. As early as 1906 a prototype of modern passenger dome cars was built. But it was not until 1945 that the first passenger car featuring an absrevation dome was placed in service. Since then, the observation dome has become one of the most popular features of modern roalroad travel. It is enjoyed today on coaches, lounge cars and diners, as well as on sleeping cars like the one illustrated above.
