In compiling this Directory of Towns, Villages and Hamlets, Past and Present, of St. Louis County, Mo., an effort has been made to include every known community. Some of the smaller towns may not be included, due to the difficulty reached in obtaining a suitable map.

The Highway Map of St. Louis County shows only the sections, townships and range of the western portion of the county. The eastern portion is covered by the City of St. Louis.

An effort has been made to include the history of some of the earlier towns of the county.

I wish to thank the Staff of the Reference Department of the Springfield Public Library, who very graciously made certain rare books available for examination.
