Volume 1, Number 5 |
Among the items willed to the Society by James H. (Jim) Ellison Is a lady's trunk dating from the latter part of the nineteenth century. Lined in beige, small figured paper bordered in blue, the trunk lid has a fashion plate from Godey's Lady's Book. The date of the illustration is not yet known, but from the gowns pictured seems to be of the 1870's.
Shown at lower right are
hames to which Mr. Ellison had attached this note:
"Hames
Made by
James Ellison (1806-1878)
1856
Made from root of Bur Oak at
the Ellison Farm (now Connors
Bend) about 3/4 miles up White
River from mouth of Big Beaver
Creek in Taney County, Mo.
J.H.E. 11-16-57"
The mortar and pestle is
of the found variety and was used to grind or pound ingredients.
Below is the keystone from a large fireplace. In addition to the clearly-carved date, there is a faint design of a bird and what appears to be the trunk of a tree.
