Bits and Pieces

We have microfilm for U. S. census for all counties in Tennessee from 1830 through 1880 in the Library at the Tennessee Technological University. In as much as many people in the White River Valley had their origin in Tennessee, I will be glad to check our records, without charge, for anyone that will give me the name of the county (and district, if possible) where the ancestor lived.

In 1870 on April 21st the first steam engine of the St. Louis San Francisco railroad entered Springfield.

Taney County tax levy in 1874 was $1.50 on the one hundred dollars assessed valuation. (In 1962 it was 45 cents on the one hundred dollars assessed valuation.)

1872 the Springfield Wagon Company was organized.

In 1871 Greene county organized an Anti-Horse thief association.

The big safe for the Bank of Forsyth was brought down the river one day last week on one of the big barges of the Ambrusen Hydraulic Construction Company. It was transported from the river to the new Bank on skids. It weighed 6,000 lbs. The new bank opened for business Saturday 16th, 1912. The first deposit was made by Charles H. Groom.
