United Brothern in Christ Church Book
Copied by Avis Hawkins

1. Letter from Miss Hawkins

In looking through some old notebooks and letters in an old trunk, I recently found an old notebook which had been used for a "time book" by Thomas F. Layton, from January 1882 through September 1886. Page after page meticulously lined and dated, with names and hours worked, but I have no idea where these men were employed. The names in 1882 were Stewart Waugh, Isaac Tindle, Dan Hinkle, Jack Stephens, Bud Layton, Barnfield Magness, and Dink Layton. In 1883: Ed Everett, Frank Hinkle, Monroe and Milt Oliver. In 1884: M. Bede, Tom Griffith. In 1885: John Rains, E. S. Waugh, Willey Griffith, M. Hawkins, Henry Barchman, Tom Caldwell, Kansas Wood, Will Woods, George Colwell, Tommy Layton, W. J. Woods, Tony Keith, and Mack Adair. In 1886 Grant Price was the only new name added. Another name is illegible, seems to be M. Barnfield or Barrfield.

Wages range from 30c to 50c per day. Some listing are for "stacking" for "rafting" to be "paid in clothes"—this was probably work done at the lumber mill; some of it most surely by young boys in the family—Bud, Dink, and Tommy Layton.

In leafing through the account book I noticed some pages with faded writing in brown ink that were not in Thomas Layton’s handwriting. I found the book had been used before, Mr. Layton started from the back, turning it up side down to use the blank pages left.

The old book had been a church record, most of the writing is faded and hard to read since in several different people’s script. Some places all but obliterated with pencilled notes over and by names. I have copied it as carefully as I can. I use the same spelling as in the book.

I thought it was interesting and having so many names at specific locations at a specific time it might help someone locate or pinpoint an ancestor as having been in Taney County at a certain year. You may recognize errors in these names. Some are so faded, the "s" written like an "f" and "j", "t" and "Y" look so similiar I can only guess as to which is correct. The dates 1869-70-71 made this record 100 years old. As far as I can tell the entries were made in different years, with notes between classes; also check marks by names indicating attendance; men’s and women’s names always separated, and the marital status designated.
