Newton Family
by Zona Hightower

George Newton was born in 1643 in England. He was the first Newton that we have record of in America. He died in Virginia in 1694. He married Frances Mason, daughter of Lemeul and Anne Searvell Mason.

Their son, George Newton, Jr. was born in 1678 in Virginia. He died in 1762. In 1706, he married Alpha Wilson, daughter of James and Elizabeth Wilson. William Newton, the son of George Newton, Jr. and Alpha Newton, was born in Virginia in 1726. He married Mary Holloway. This William Newton also had a son William Newton, Jr. who was born in 1750 and died in February, 1817.

This William Newton, Jr. married Elizabeth Field, daughter of Captain Benjamin Field. Their son who was born March 5, 1783, in Virginia was named William Field Newton, Jr. This William Field Newton, Jr. (my great grandfather) was the father of Andrew Newton.

William Field Newton married Elizabeth Todd. She was born July 11, 1790, in Virginia and died March 24, 1856, in Wright County. Both William Field Newton who died December 25, 1860, and Elizabeth Todd Newton are buried in the Nancy Newton Cemetery about six miles northwest of Mansfield.

After their marriage William Field and Nancy Todd Newton left Virginia and moved to Kentucky. From there they went to Morgan County, Indiana. In 1835, they came to Wright County, Missouri. At this time they had eight sons and two daughters who came to Missouri with them. Members of the Todd and Rippee families also came to Wright County at this time.

The names of the children of William Field and Nancy Todd Newton are Bill, Andrew, (my grandfather. It is this Andrew Newton’s Bible records which follow.) Jim, Wills, Alec, George, Nevels, John, Katy, and Betsy.

Jesse A. Newton, the thirteenth child of Andrew and Mary Newton, married Julia Enola Hulse who was born August 23, 1880. They were married October 21, 1906. Although these are my parents I know very little about my mother’s people. Her mother, Sarah Massey Hulse, died near Seymour in Webster County when my mother was only a year old. Her father, George Hulse, was unable to care for a baby daughter. A family named William and Maria Judd of Webster County reared her as a daughter, but she was not adopted by them.
