The Boone County Historical and Genealogical Society was organized in Harrison, Arkansas, on May 2, 1978. The meeting was held at the North Arkansas Community College and the following officers were elected: president, Roger Logan; vice president, Mrs. Harold Cox; secretary, Mrs. Walter Basch; treasurer, Mrs. Jack B. Holt, and reporter, Miss Eula Albright. Membership at the June 6 meeting was reported as 52.

A principal project of the society is the sponsoring of the publication of a book "Pioneer Families of the Ozarks," which will contain biographical sketches of families of Baxter, Boone, Marion and Searcy Counties.

Do you need help with your genealogical research? Let the Society help you if we can. We have several qualified members (Lena Wills; Mrs. John Vineyard and Betty Ingenthron to mention a few) who can help and/or we will place your requests in the Bits and Pieces column. Write to the Society office and we will channel your inquiries.

Dorothy Smith Ackerman, 9608 N. E. 198th, Bothell, WA. 98011, is searching for information regarding an ASA G. SMITH who died intestate in Stone County (probate dated Feb. 11, 1867). She writes that the circuit and criminal court records of the county indicate Asa was in and out of court and may have been in some trouble with the law. The date, she has been unable to determine the exact cause or exact date of his death, be it natural or otherwise. Can some of our members help this lady in her search?

Sympathy is extended to Marvin E. Tong, our publicity chairman, in the recent loss of his wife Barbara.

Grateful appreciation is expressed to Dr. Alice A. Nightingale for the superb job done in indexing all twelve issues of Volume 2 of the Quarterly. This index already has been used several times to answer inquiries, saving lots of time in research.

Mrs. Donna Ricchiuti of Sherman Oaks, CA. writes us to say how much she enjoyed Leonard Williams’ story of Dug Spring. Her great, great grandfather, Clemial Davis was killed in 1861 and was buried on the Williams’ farm until after the war.

October 25th and The Battle of Mine Creek" by Lumir F. Buresh is available from the author, 4817 W. 69th St., Prairie Village, KS 66208, for $12.96. The facts concerning strengths, causalities and armament is presented, analyzed and documented and includes 70 pictures and illustrations plus 10 maps -- all the painstaking detail of the only Civil War battle fought in Kansas. "The most comprehensive report of the action yet" -says the Kansas City Times.

The Society acknowledges with deep gratitude the gift of a beautiful gavel by Helen J. H. Fletcher, the retiring president. This gavel is to be kept in the possession of the Secretary for the use of future presiding officers of the White River Valley Historical Society.
