Maggie's Certificate

This is an award given to Margaret, "Maggie" Headlee. Maggie, at the time, was 10 years of age and attended a one-room school at Hickory Barrens, located in northeast Greene County. The faded certificate reads:
"This certifies that
M. E. Headlee
made the most improvement at a Writing School taught at Hickory Barrens, Greene., Mo.
By A. W. Haltom, Jan. 1870"
Headlees came in 1822 and 1836 from Iredell Co. Tenn. where they stopped awhile. Maggie was the oldest daughter of Capt. Samuel W. Headlee, who fought on the side of the Union in 16th Mo. Cavalry. He was a brother of my grandfather Elisha Headlee, who was a Confederate Captain and surgeon in 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, Army of the West under Gen. Marmaduke in the Civil War.
Maggie was single, but raised her deceased sister Cora’s daughter, Jessie Robards. Maggie died at the age of 82, March 27, 1942 and was buried at Mt. Comfort Cemetery in Greene County.
As a child, I slept in Maggie’s high bed which had a trundle bed under it. On the bed was a featherbed so thick that it came up around my face. I could not breathe unless I slept on my back. The house where she lived most of her life still stands but the long porch has been replaced by a smaller one. The house is well cared for by its owner, Tony Hart.
