Volume 7, Number 3 - Spring 1980

President's Message

As I close my second term as your president I look back over the past two years with a sense of pride in the accomplishments of our society. I take no credit for my own work, but I am grateful for the cooperation of the members and staff that has been so evident.

When I took office in June 1978, we had 200 members and a bank balance of less than $200.00. Now we are on a sound financial footing with a membership of more than 300. We are prone to think of the White River Valley Historical Society as a purely Taney County organization since we have approximately eighty-five members in Taney County but do you know we have one hundred and fifty-four members in our nine county White River Valley area plus thirty-two additional members in Missouri? We have members in twenty-six different states, sending quarterlies to twenty-nine members in California, ten in Texas, nine in Oklahoma., fourteen in Kansas, seven in Arkansas and seven in Washington. We also have six members in Colorado and six in Oregon; four in Illinois and four in Wisconsin; three in each state of Arizona, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Ohio; two in each state of Alaska, Kentucky, Utah and Virginia; and one member in each state of Connecticut, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Montana, New York and Tennessee. So, our Society is not just a little group of Southern Missouri historians, but a nation-wide group interested in our heritage, our fore-fathers and our past.

Let us not rest on our laurels and say "We have done enough", but keep on furnishing materials for publication. It is your quarterly! We are doing our best to keep it interesting.

Now comes dues paying time. Let’s endeavor to make our membership reach 400 in 1981. We have the facilities and opportunities. Let’s take advantage of them!

Lucille A. Brown
