Historical Essay Contest

At the September 13th meeting the Executive Committee recommended that the Society sponsor an Historical Essay Contest open to High School students. The recommendation was adopted and Paul Johns, Vice-President, was appointed to prepare a set of rules.

It is hoped that this contest will create an interest in our area history, especially in the students who enter the contest. It will provide an incentive to do first-hand research and it may turn up new and interesting historical data not presently known and published. It could provide the Editor with some new and original articles for the quarterly. It is hoped that this project will activate more interest in the Society itself and result in new members, both now and in the future.

The rules for the contest have been completed and soon will be sent to all area High Schools in the Missouri White River Valley. The deadline for entries is February 1, 1982. They will be judged by a jury composed of faculty members of The School of the Ozarks. Dr. Bobby Hendrickson, Chairman of the English Department, will chair the judges.

Prizes will be: FIRST PLACE $15.00. SECOND PLACE $10.00. THIRD PLACE $5.00. Prizes will be awarded at our March 14, 1982 meeting.

If you know students or teachers in the Counties of Barry, Stone, Taney, Ozark, Douglas, Christian, and Greene, who might be interested, please tell them about the contest. Anyone wanting a set of rules may have them by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to The White River Valley Historical Society, Box 565, Point Lookout, Missouri 65726.
