Bits & Pieces

Norvil L. Brown, 42733 Keystone, Canton, MI 48187 is trying to locate any descendents of, or information about John B.N. Redman and his wife, Rebecca. He was in the census of Swan Township, Taney Co. in 1840. In 1850 he was in Prairie Twp., Washington Co. AR, and in the 1860 census he was in Jasper Twp., Taney, Co. He served with the 5th Regiment, Missouri Confederate Infantry. He enlisted at Springfield, January 25, 1862, and was appointed a sergeant. He was captured at Elkhorn Tavern and subsequently died in a POW camp at Alton, IL. John was born in Kentucky, maybe Wayne County, in 1815 and his wife was born in Kentucky about 1816. Their children were: Francis or Frances (M or F?), b. 1834; Louisa, b. 1836, m. a widower, John Dye before 1860; Elizabeth, b. 1840; Rebecca, b. 1842; Martha, b. 1844; Sarah, b. 1846; John, b. 1848; David, b. 1855; Cyrus, b. 1858; and, Thomas J., b. 1861. Anyone that is related to these ancestors are invited to write, and anyone that has any information will be refunded their postage.

Sue Taylor, 5632 S. Allegheny Ct, Baton Rouge, LA 70816 needs help in locating a mortality schedule for Stone County, 1879. She would like information on Zebedee Taylor, who married Parmelia Clark in August 1857 in Stone County. Children were: Reuben; Joseph (m V. J. Miller); Hannah (m James O. Martin); John (m Zona Gauge); and, Susan (m C. M. Robinson). Zebedee’s parents were John and Lucinda Taylor. Evidently Zebedee and Parmelia died within a short time of each other, but how and when, etc.? Sue has not found any death records, but thinks it was about 1879. C. W. Clark (might have been Parmelia’s brother) became guardian of the children in 1879. Any help will be appreciated.

Long-time member Myrtle Pine of L.A., CA sends a bit of data along with her dues. She and her sister, Mabel Stacy, Bellingham, WA are sisters of Joseph L. Matthews of Taneyville, MO., former assessor of Taney County.

New member, Dorothy Dodd, Route 4 - Box 672, Carthage, MO 64836 is interested in the Stone County area. Her husband is a descendent of the Gibson, Gipson, Lawhorn, Beard, Hodges, Estes and Couch families that settled in the areas of Crane and Crossroads, MO. Please share any information with her.

Ann Alexanger writes that she is a native of Taney County and the Quarterly means a great deal to her. Many of the stories are about old neighbors or people that she knew. Her father was James Roland VanZandt (born 1823) and was known as "The Old Captain Van Zandt."

Don Vincent, 936 N. Skyline Dr., Tacoma, WA 98406, who writes "Sharing the Past", a genealogy column for Pulaski, Laclede, Texas, Webster, Wright, Phelps, Manes, Osage, Miller and Camden Counties, MO., sends this notice. Due to economic necessity (paper Consolidation and subscription rates doubling) the column now appears in the "RICELAND MIRROR." Rate: $10. yr., Box 757, Richland, MO 65556 and queries are free to subscribers of that paper.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks for the memorial gifts to The School of the Ozarks, the letters and cards of sympathy that are being received following the death of my mother, Freda Maneely on October 11. Your prayers and strengthening concern were appreciated during the time of her illness.
Sincerely, Ionamae

In Memoriam Glenn Johnston September 26, 1982
