(Jefferson City)-Secretary of State James C. Kirkpatrick today announced his Archives Division is cooperating with the State Court Administrator’s office and Probate and Circuit Court Divisions in each county to ease local record storage space and cost problems and to insure the preservation of all historically-valuable records.
In response to Missouri Supreme Court Administrative Rule No. 8 issued earlier this year, Archives is working closely with local counties to identify records of enduring value and to insure their preservation of microfilming.
The Archives’ staff has recently completed a survey of six counties and identified records of permanent value. The survey was conducted in order to determine the approximate cost of preserving vital county records throughout the state.
Kirkpatrick stated that a specific budget appropriation based on the costs of the six counties will be requested when the Legislature convenes in January to allow the Archives Division to work with all 114 counties and the City of St. Louis.
"Efforts must be made immediately," Kirkpatrick emphasized, "to preserve Missouri’s colorful history for future generations. Historical records, such as the famous Dred Scott decision, could be lost if each county’s records are not properly catalogued and preserved."

Call for Papers: Sessions on all fields and aspects of history, including local, regional and public history. Proposals for papers, presentations, sessions, welcomed. Papers should be limited to twenty-five minute presentations. Sessions and papers should be submitted by January 15, 1984.
