PROGRAM OF THE SEPTEMBER 14, 1986 MEETING
The program was a report by members of the Steamboat Landing Committee, Jerry Gideon, Penelope Willard, and Viola Hartman. They reviewed the several accomplishments of the Committee, including the very successful reenactment on July 13, 14, and 15 of Sweeney’s raid on Forsyth, along with the dedication of the old town site, the old court house, and the steamboat landing.
They announced that the Corps of Engineers had been funded to begin archeological exploration on the site of the old court house, and that work would begin in October. They also reported that because of the Committee’s success and experience, other groups and organizations had approached the Committee for advice and assistance in identifying and developing historic sites.
The Steamboat Landing Committee has not been officially associated with the White River Valley Historical Society, but, because members of the Committee were also members of the Society, the Society was credited in most publicity related to the work of the Committee.
Jerry Gideon suggested that the Committee should be officially acknowledged by the Society. Discussion by members indicated that they believed that the work being done by the Steamboat Landing Committee was very appropriate for the Society to be associated with, and should be encouraged. A motion was adopted by the members pesent which recognized the Steamboat Landing Committee as a special committee of the Society.
