Volume 1, Number 10
The second annual dinner meeting, held in Fellowship Hall at The School of the Ozarks, Saturday, November 2, 1963, was attended by over one hundred members and guests. After dinner, President Ralph D. McPherson introduced other officers and directors of the Society.
The speaker was the Hon. Vernon M. James, State Representative, who recalled his boyhood on a cattle ranch near Protem, Missouri. Through his vivid descriptions of his home and family, as well as the religious, educational, and social institutions, his audience was able to recapture some of the flavor and spirit of those austere yet rewarding times.
Guest soloists were Miss Verna Cole of Norwood and Mr. Bob Triplett of Mountain View, both students at the School. Their accompanist was Mr. John Mizell, head of the Music Department.
Oldest member present at the meeting was eighty-one-year-old Mr. Jack Riner of Forsyth. The person who came the longest distance was Mrs. Mabel Stacey of Bellingham, Washington.
Winners of door prizes (one-year memberships) were Jennie L. Johnson, Forsyth; John C. Arnold, Forsyth; Edythe Hayes, Branson; Kenneth Ford, Hollister; Mary Davidson, Branson; Valentine Jones, Forsyth; Mrs. Guy B. Mitchell, Branson; Thelma Hermilla, Ozark; Earl Sechler, Springfield; and Mrs. A. R. Whorton, Branson.
Secretary Elmo Ingenthron reported that there were 630 members at the end of the Society's second year, compared to 210 at the end of the first year. The distribution for 1963-64 was:Business and Professional Members 5
We now have members in most of the states and in two foreign countries. Outside of Missouri, California leads the other states with 38 members, while Texas ranks second and Oklahoma third. Mr. Ingenthron also reported that, as a result of reading the quarterly publication, several out-of-state members have visited the area this summer and fall.
We again thank Dr. R. M. Good and Dr. M. Graham Clark and members of their staff for helping to make the dinner meeting an outstanding event for the Society's second year.
