Volume 1, Number 8
This is the year we cease to be a "new" organization. We hope that we continue to have growing pains, for the very life of a society like ours depends upon a large and expanding membership. We hope to see the activities of the Society broadened, especially in the area of housing the research material and museum items we have and those we expect to add. We hope to see more historical markers throughout the region. And we hope there will be an increased interest in the research and writing of the history of the White River Valley,
Each member has rights and privileges, and with these always go responsibilities. Each of us is responsible for helping the Society grow, and for helping it fulfill the purpose for which it was organized. Each of us knows at least one other person who would be interested in the Society - ask him to join. Each of us has a family history to be written, or we know about a com munity, a business or profession, a church, or a school with a history which others would enjoy reading-write them and send them in to be published. Each of us has old pictures which would be of interest to others in the Society-have them copied for the Society's files. Each of us knows of an historic site which should be marked-bring up the subject at your next civic club meeting, or form a committee to raise money for the marker. The Historical Markers Committee will help you in research or in designing the marker.
There is other help which is needed: more sustaining members, a fund for copying photo graphs loaned to the Society, a fund for buying census reports for all the counties represented in the Society, and for collecting other research material.
For the past two years, the Society has steadily grown in membership and, we believe, has made some real contributions in the discovery and preservation of our region's history. We are cer tain that there is an increased interest in local history. We hope that this interest will continue to grow and result in progress toward our goals so that we may be proud of our accomplishments when our third year ends. It's all up to you the members.
