Headstone Inscriptions, Wasola Cemetery, Ozark County

A compilation of headstone information from the 87-year-old Wasola Cemetery, formerly known as the Shelton Cemetery, has recently been made by J. Vernie Hicks, Springfield, a former resident of this area.

The land for the Shelton cemetery, as it was originally named, was donated from land belonging to three families who owned adjoining farms. Two of the families were named Shelton, thus the cemetery was named for them, although only two Shelton’s have marked graves in the cemetery, Christopher and Melvina Shelton.

Elizabeth Howe was the first person to be buried in the cemetery on May 17, 1886.

Among the 211 graves in the cemetery, 31 are marked by rocks.
