SALLEE
By Dean Wallace

My 8th generation Sallee grandfather was born Isaac de Salley who lived in France in 1600’s and was of Huguenot descent.

My 7th generation Sallee grandparent was Calvin, who renounced Catholicism about 1660 and fled to England where he died 1691. In England he spelled his name Salle.

His son (my 6th generation grandparent) Abraham Salle came to this country and settled at Manikintown, Va., in 1700’s and died there.

His son, William, (my 5th generation) married #2 Magdeline Chastain and they lived in Virginia until his death when she moved to Kentucky.

Her son, Oliver, (my 4th generation,) was born in Virginia and moved with his family to Mercer County, Kentucky where he died. He was a tanner by trade. Their son, Stephen, (my 3rd generation) was born in Virginia and was married at a young age to Polly Lockhart and they later moved to Illinois where he served as Justice of Peace in Schuyler County where he arrested my grandfather, David Wallace, for fighting.

Stephen left Illinois in 1830 and moved to Arkansas where Polly died in the 1840’s. He later lived in Barry, Taney, and Ozark Counties, Missouri where he died in Taney County in 1852 and was buried in Kissee Mills cemetery in 1852. His grave was not found when they relocated the cemetery in 1950’s and is one of unknown markers in the new cemetery.

Their son, Araneus Chastain, later known as "Chat", Rane Chastain, Arany Shasteen, or A. S. as he signed his name in later years.

A. S. was born in Mercer Co., Ky., before the family moved to Illinois. He married Martha Greene in Schuyler County, III., in 1829. They later moved to Madison County, Arkansas and later to Ozark County where Martha died and was buried

in Welch cemetery near Longrun, Missouri.

A. S. served in the Union forces in the Civil war, but died at Cassville, in 1862. He is buried in National Cemetery in Springfield, Mo.

Their son, James H., was born 1833 in Madison Co., Ark., and spent most of his adulthood life in Ozark County. He was a Captain in the Union forces during the Civil war. He married #1 Emily Merritt, who died after giving birth to one son. James H. then married #2, Emarine Martin Martin, a widow. They had several children.

He was a minister of the gospel and served as Justice of the Peace. He was also a farmer and resided on a farm near go, Missouri, located west of Thornfield, Missouri. He and Emarine are buried on this farm that is known as the go cemetery. The surrounding land is now owned by a Turner family.

Their daughter, my grandmother, Martha Sallee, was married to David Wallace on New Year’s day at Lutie, Mo. and walked three miles through the snow to have the wedding performed. They spent their life near Hammond, Mo., and were the parents of 12 children.

Martha was often called upon to be of service as a mid-wife and to help with the sick as she knew of many folk-medicine remedies.

David died in 1939 and she died in 1950. Both are buried in the Thornfield, Mo. cemetery.

My father, L. D. Wallace, died in 1968.

The name Sallee is found spelled various ways from the original spelling as well as the present-day spelling.

Among the descendant Sallee’s still living are Kelley Sallee of Gainesville, Mo., and Ted Sallee of Ava, Mo.
