Volume 8, Number 7, Spring 1984
The quarterly meeting of The White River Valley Historical Society convened in the Good Memorial College Center Cafeteria on March 11, 1984 at 1:20 p.m. with President Fred Hartman presiding. Artie Ayres gave the invocation. Mr. Ayres then answered the question of which Loma Schuphach was not sure in her story of The School of the Ozarks Fire (Vol. 8 - No. 6 - p. 7) when she couldnt remember with whom she got in bed. He said that it was his mama - no name given.
Mr. Ayres suggested that the society apply for a grant from the Missouri Committee of the Humanities to provide funding of interviewers to record our history.
Introductions of member. and guests totaled 42 including 4 charter members.
The Nominating Committee, composed of Elmo Ingenthron, Artie Ayres, and Viola Hartman, chairman, gave a first reading of their report.
Unfinished Business-Motion for Expenditure of Plaques
Historic Sites Chairman, Bill Cameron, reported on the Swan Bridge Project. Although no motion was pending much discussion on number, wording, costs, etc. ensued. Secretary moved that the society allow $190 to buy plaques to be used for marking historic sites sponsored by the society. Motion carried. (This amount will pay for 1 casting and 6 plaques).
Mr. Ayres moved that we meet in Cummings Auditorium for Annual Meeting on June 10. Motion carried. Kathleen VanBuskirk moved that the time of the meeting be changed to 1:30 p.m. Motion carried.
Program-Reading of Essays
Mrs. Van Buskirk introduced Essay Contest winners who read their essays: 3rd place - "Spring Creek Mill - First Business in Hurley" by Kathleen DeWitt; 2nd place - "Roaring River Maid" by Connie Waller; and, 1st place - "Schools of the Past - School of Today" by Deonna Eutsler. Checks were presented to each winner by the President and parents and friends of contestants were recognized.
Minutes of March meeting were approved as printed.
Mary Elizabeth Bradley, faculty member of the S of O Music Department, presented a program "Old Instruments and Early Music of the Ozarks."
Next meeting will be June 10 in Cummings Auditorium at 1:30 p.m.
Meeting adjourned 3:50 p.m.
