This
is a color photocopy of a postcard. On the back is the caption "Own
your own shoe skates. Roll to the music of the Hammond Organ." The
organ referred to was played by a succession of several different
organists, the most famous being Johnny Kemm.
Springfield had a number of famous roller-skaters during the 1960s
and 1970s. After 1955 when the Star Roller Rink was closed, Doling
was the only skating rink in town. Cathy Ebling was probably Springfield's
most famous skater, winning many national competitions. Larry Moyniham,
Ted Hall and Gracie and Verna Forsythe were other well-known skaters
who trained at Doling.
The rink was built in 1929 and stands where the original Giboney
cabin was built. The rink had a hardwood maple floor.
