The publication of this index is a result of our efforts to identify early Greene Countians who may have been missed by census takers. This index is anothersource for documenting the time frame a person lived in the County. It will be a useful tool for genealogistsand others. There are over 16,000 entries in this index.Gladys Sloan abstracted the names from the Stray Books and Carolyn Snider arranged and typed the index. I want to express my sincere thanks to Gladys and Carolyn for their work in making this index possible.
Records such as these, wills, probate records, divorce decrees, adoption papers, naturalization records, tax assessment rolls, land tax records, civil and criminal case files, school records, county court proceedings, voter registration files, etc, are important to protect the rights of the citizens of Greene County.These records are also of historic value because they document the growth and development of the county. As Greene County Clerk, it is my duty to preserve these records after they have been transferred to the Archives, to establish control over them, and to make them available to county officials, to the academic community,and to the general public.
These records will be of interest to anyone who is looking for their ancestors in Greene County.
