SEEING A FINE BUNCH OF DEER IN WINTER TIME
By S. C. Turnbo

Among the old time people who have hunted on Shoal Creek in Taney County, Mo., is Mort Herrean who informed me one day that on one occasion while he was hunting on the creek he saw 75 deer in the Big Spring Hollow ¼ mile or less above the spring where Protem is now. This was in the winter of 1851-2 and a snow 4 inches deep lay on the ground and the deer had trampled it down like a flock of sheep. It seemed that the hillside was lined with deer but they were not in sight very long for they soon took fright and disap-peared beyond my view on a run making the snow fly as they went along."
