All Library branches will be closed and the Mobile Library will not make its scheduled stops on Thursday, Nov. 27, in observance of Thanksgiving Day.

Enjoy Stargazing September 14 at Library Center

September 10, 2010 — Star search returns Tuesday at the Library Center.

Members of the Springfield Astronomical Society, who wowed us with heavenly views in May, will again serve as our guides to the stars and planets with their telescopes from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 14.

They’ll set up telescopes on the south lawn of the Library Center; amateur astronomers are welcome to bring their own and ask questions.

Arrive early at 7 p.m. and NASA Solar System Ambassador – now that’s a title! – Jim Caffey will speak on the south patio. Caffey is a Drury University professor of astronomy, physics and space science.

Rain date is Tuesday, Sept. 21, a date to mark on your calendar for yet another reason.

That’s Library Snapshot Day: Show-Me Your Library. Staff at every one of the 10 branches and bookmobile will try to capture one day in the life of the library district through photos, video and statistics recorded at the branches and outreach programs.

We’ll also ask customers to drop by their favorite branch that day and fill out a comment card, or post a message about the library on www.facebook.com/snapshotday. You can go there now to learn more and get details about a photo contest that day.

Our goal is to capture a visual and statistical “snapshot” of the library and the impact it has on the community. We’re counting everything -- feet through the doors and dogs through the drive-up. We hope you’ll stop by that day – in person or online – and get in our snapshot.

If you’re like a lot of us book lovers, you have at least one box of books stashed on some shelf or closet floor that you’ve always meant to clear out. Now would be a great time to move it out the door and do something you’ll feel good about.

The Friends of the Library continues to accept donated books to sell at the Fall Book Sale Oct. 19-24 at Remington’s. Proceeds benefit the library district and you, as patrons who use the library.

If you have books, CDs, movies or other audiovisual materials you’re ready to get rid of, drop them by any branch library during business hours. Questions? Call Jim at 872-5149 or any branch library.
