Research Health Information with Resources from the Library

September 24, 2010 — Health information isn’t hard to find these days, but knowing what’s reliable is trickier. The Springfield-Greene County Library District can point you in the right direction with several “doctor-approved” online resources and more than 250 new books recently added to the collection.

We’re highlighting our online, consumer health resources and our new materials during two health and wellness events, including one from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Library Station. An identical program will be from 2-5 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Library Center. These events for Health Literacy Month are free and open to the public.

Health and wellness booths will be on display beginning at 2 p.m. in the lobby. Library staff will demonstrate how to find reliable medical information on the library’s databases. In addition, sessions will run every 15 minutes to show you how to find specific online health topics such as choosing a physician, treatments and latest news on mental health disorders, alternative medicine, medications and more. You can always find them at thelibrary.org/health.

The new titles and events are made possible through a recent $6,000 grant to the Library Foundation from the Smith-Glynn-Callaway Medical Foundation.

The new Botanical Center at Nathanael Greene-Close Memorial Park will open to the public Oct. 11-17, but you can get a preview at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27 in meeting room B at the Library Center.

“Welcome to the Botanical Center” is one in the district’s Armchair University series. Members of Friends of the Garden will share an insider’s view of the new center.

Ever heard of “steampunk”? One definition is “Victorian science fiction,” much like the Will Smith movie “Wild, Wild West,” says library collection services librarian Jennifer Hendzlik.

Author K.W. Jeter coined the term steampunk in the late 1980s to describe stories he was working on that were alternative history science fiction set in the Victorian time period, she says.

You can see steampunk art and fashion at the 13th Annual C-Street Loftwalk and Steampunk Show noon to 6 p.m. today (SEPT. 27).

Then read steampunk literature from the library. Our collection includes titles such as “Clementine,” “The Clockwork Man” and “Fever Crumb,” and more.
