Celebrate the Seasons with the Library

November 12, 2010 — The library district is heading into one of its busiest seasons of the year, with a Barnes & Noble book fair, book trees and wreaths and a Holiday Store for kids. Oh yes, and a celebration of rare Shakespeare books.

Just look what’s in store, and save the dates.

  • What says November like accordion music? Today at 2 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium, come hear “Le Grande Dames Tour the 20th Century.” Lou Le Brun and Sharon Fox, queens of the accordion, will play a range of favorites.
  • You still have time to turn your purchases from Barnes & Noble into a donation to the library district. Order anything online from bn.com/bookfairs today through Thursday (Nov. 18) with book fair voucher ID 10263747, Barnes & Noble will donate a percentage of the sale to the library. The Library Foundation and Barnes & Noble kicked off the book fair Nov. 13 at the store; you can still help the library by ordering online this week.
  • The Friends of the Library made headlines after unveiling rare, 1773 and 1774 editions of Shakespeare’s works they found among donated books at the Brentwood Branch Library. The Friends will formally donate them to the rare books collection of Missouri State University’s Meyer Library at a public reception at 4 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 17) at the Brentwood Branch. Come see the books and hear MSU English professor James Baumlin talk about their significance.
  • New books are always at the top of the library’s wish list, and the Library Foundation is offering a “gifting” opportunity. From Nov. 27-Dec. 23, each branch will display a tree or wreath with ornaments depicting children’s books the library needs.
  • When you donate the $5-$20 for a specific title, it will be added to the district’s collection. The donor’s name will be added to the ornament and returned to the tree or wreath to inspire others.
  • The Holiday Store opens Nov. 27 at the Library Center and Library Station. That’s when the Between Friends gift shops create a store with gift items at kid-friendly prices. The popular family event kicks off that morning with the Holiday Open House – games, snacks and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Look for details at the libraries or thelibrary.org.
