Kids’ Dollars Help Raise Money for Library Services

Pint-sized holiday shoppers helped raise about $3,900 for the Springfield-Greene County Library District’s 2011 summer reading program for kids.

That was the net profit from children’s gift purchases during the library’s Holiday Store from Nov. 27 through Dec. 5 at the Library Center and Library Station. The store is stocked annually with low-cost gifts so children can secretly shop for family and friends with the help of a library volunteer.

Thanks to their purchases, the Holiday Store hit a sales record of $7,220.95, an increase from 2009 sales of $5,420.93, said Shelli Kaminski, manager of the Between Friends gift shops who coordinates the Holiday Store.

In another project Nov. 13-18, families helped raise $344 for the Library Foundation, said Director Michelle Creed. That money also goes back the library district.

When shoppers bought items at Barnes & Noble or online with a library book fair ID number, Barnes & Noble donated a percentage of the total sales to the Library Foundation.

“We really appreciate the participation of families helping us raise money that, in turn, helps us provide services for them,” said library Executive Director Regina Greer Cooper. “The projects truly reflect ‘families helping families’ through their library.”
