Get Help with E-readers and Downloadables at Library Programs

January 14, 2011 — If you’re still learning how to get the most out of the e-reader you received for Christmas, or have questions about how to download free e-books, e-audiobooks and e-video through the library website, the library has scheduled help sessions this month just for you.

Library staff will be available during these sessions to explain:

  • which e-readers are compatible with the Overdrive software on the library’s website,
  • how to download the software for free (with a valid library card) onto your laptop, e-reader or mobile device,
  • how to download e-books from the library’s collection onto your device,
  • and other troubleshooting tips.

Feel free to bring your e-reader or other mobile device for hands-on help.

The class schedule is:

  • 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave.
  • 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Library Center
  • 11 a.m. Jan. 28 at the Republic Branch Library, 921 N. Lindsey Ave., Republic
  • 1:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Brentwood Branch Library, 2214 Brentwood Blvd.
  • 6:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Brentwood Branch Library

You can always visit one of the library branches and get help from a librarian. Or explore the tutorial at your convenience on Download Zone on thelibrary.org.

Demand for downloadables was so high during the Christmas holidays, e-reader owners quickly exhausted the library’s collection. We continue to place orders for more e-items, so please check back. As part of the e-reader help sessions, the library trainers will also provide tip sheets on other sources of free downloadables.

If you’re in the mood for music today (Sunday, Jan. 16) stop by the Library Station at 2 p.m. to hear the Queen City Sound Chorus. This local chapter of Sweet Adelines International sings sweet barbershop harmony. The event is sponsored by Friends of the Library, Panera Bread will provide refreshments.

Have an overdue-book fine balance hanging over your head? Start fresh in 2011 during Food For Fines, our “fine amnesty” week Jan. 23-29. The library will subtract 50 cents from your fine balance for each item of non-perishable food you bring to a library branch for Ozarks Food Harvest. Last year’s Food For Fines collected more than 3 tons for the regional food bank.
