Tax and E-reader Help Available at the Library

Taxes are on everyone’s minds, judging by the people dropping by the libraries for income tax forms, instructions and other resources. Be sure to call the respective branch to make sure it has the materials you need.
The library district will provide space for free tax help sessions in the coming months by Missouri State University students working with the ATLS Coalition.
The first two are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, and 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10 at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library.
The students will provide free federal and state tax return preparation, e-filing, Missouri property tax credit, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and other required federal and state tax forms for low-to-moderate income families and individuals including those with disabilities, non-English speakers and older adults.

The library’s final e-reader help sessions will be at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 31, at the Brentwood Branch Library. They’re popular sessions – others in the series have drawn 25 to 30 attendees.
Staff will explain which e-readers and other portable devices are compatible with the free OverDrive software on the library’s website, and how to download books free from the library’s collection.
Please note: Due to a policy dictated by Amazon, the Kindle is not compatible with any other download software including the library’s. These sessions will not be useful for Kindle owners.

The library will partner this year with Missouri State University on a showcase event for the African American Read In Chain in late February on the MSU campus. But MSU plans two events this week that tie into Black History Month and the library’s online Civil War collection, “Community & Conflict,” ozarkscivilwar.org.
- At 5 p.m. on Jan. 31 in the Meyer Library Auditorium, the public is invited to attend a forum, "The Pedagogy of Playwriting: Drama as a Tool for Exploring the Self and Cultural Identity,” with Jon Herbert, Ozarks Technical Community College theater performing arts instructor and playwright.
- At 6:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in MSU’s Plaster Student Union Theatre, Herbert will present his play, "Beloved Exile,” based on the Civil War-era writings of early Springfield resident Louisa Cheairs McKenny Sheppard. Her writings appear in Community & Conflict.
