National Library Week: A Great Time to Visit Your Library

April 8, 2011 — National Library Week, April 10-16, gives libraries a “news peg” on which to hang stories about their value and services. That’s an easy story to tell for Springfield-Greene County Libraries any week, especially this one.

What’s happening?

  • The Little Hoover’s Big Band celebrates jazz at 2 p.m. today in the Library Center. The group meshes amateur and professional high school and college students.
  • iPad and iPad2 users can get some tips on downloading library materials using OverDrive software during two sessions led by library staff: 1 p.m. Monday at the Brentwood Branch Library; and 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Republic Branch Library.
  • Learn how Civil War-era cooks whipped up a meal at 7 p.m. Monday at the Fair Grove Lions Club. Civil War enthusiast Tim Field will demonstrate cooking techniques and utensils. The program is part of April Big Read programs on the theme, Voices of Conflict: The American Civil War.
  • At 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Library Center auditorium, The Civil War Roundtable will play host to “Every Man, Woman & Child – Negroes & All – Are Here for the Wars: Civil War Correspondence of the Campbell Family.” The readings are from “Confederate Girlhoods: A Women’s History of Early Springfield, Missouri.”
  • The week is dotted with programs for all ages at the Brentwood Branch, leading up to the library’s 40th anniversary celebration at an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Relive the 70s with music and a dance demonstration, refreshments and a car show by Springfield Vintage Motor Club.
  • Or, hear about Civil War Medicine: Challenges and Miracles at 2 p.m. for all ages at the Willard Branch.
  • The Ash Grove Branch will play host at 10 a.m. Saturday to library historian Michael Price, giving his popular Common Soldier talk that recently drew 85 people to the Fair Grove program.
  • The Library Center, meanwhile, will house seminars from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for the Ozarks Green Building Coalition Fair.
  • From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, pick up some computer skills by our staff and get a free PC tune-up at Staples, 2135 E. Independence Ave.
  • Learn to cook with herbs at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Midtown Carnegie Branch with Victory Mission’s Cook’s Kettle staff and Master Gardener Gina Marie Walden.

On Sunday….you can rest.
