Community Brings Success to Book Sale and Library Programs

May 6, 2011 — A mountain of thanks goes to the people of Greene County and all the surrounding communities for dodging the rain storms April 26-May 1 to shop at the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale.

Friends volunteers sold $102,068.20 in used books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks and more during the sale – the fifth consecutive Friends book sale that passed the $100,000 mark.

It’s one of the feel-good events of the community. We help you recycle your donated used books and other items by pricing them low and selling them in a marathon event. And the proceeds help fund free library programs for all ages, books for preschoolers, branch refurbish projects and the Mobile Library, the new bookmobile expected to arrive this spring.

Save the date: The Friends Fall Book Sale is Oct. 18-23 at Remington’s in Springfield.

Two of the library district’s most popular programs return this week – Stargazing, and Geezerfest.

Stargazing at the Library begins at 8:30 p.m. on the south lawn of the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave. Members of the Springfield Astronomical Society will guide us through the night sky with their telescopes. You’re welcome to bring your own, too. Rain date is May 17.

Stop by the branch concourse early and check out the 3-D exhibit -- “The Moon: Cosmic Decoder Ring,” on display through May 20. The exhibit, which comes with 3-D glasses, shows how the moon’s craters are a decoding tool that help us understand the planets in our solar system.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Southwest Missouri Planetarium and Science Center, Branson, and the Springfield Astronomical Society. The display is from The Lunar and Planetary Institute, a research institute that provides support services to NASA and the planetary science community.

At 7 p.m. May 14, Geezerfest: School’s Out Concert! comes to the Library Center with everyone’s favorite 60s and 70s tunes. Join us on the patio, order a snack from the Mudhouse and enjoy the sounds of Geezer starring Richard Struckhoff, Mark Ellman, Duane Lewis, Daniel Pasquale, Rusty Swift and Jana Henderson.

Earlier on May 14, enjoy some “roots rock” by Brother Wiley at 2 p.m. in the Midtown Carnegie Branch, 397 E. Central St. It’s part of the library’s Rockin’ Saturday series.
