Find Summer Fun at the Library
June 3, 2011 —
Summer keeps getting more interesting at the library. Just look at what’s ahead this week: a travel photography class, a live Skype chat with an author, a Civil War antiques road show, a block party and more. (And that doesn’t count the computer skills classes, children’s storytimes and music by a group called Toucan Jam.)
Be sure to save Saturday: Back by popular demand is the Civil War Antique Road Show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in the Library Center auditorium.
Bring your Civil War-era heirlooms and let Civil War historians including several from Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield and the State Historical Society of Missouri Research Center – Rolla assess their historical significance. (No monetary value will be placed on items.) As time permits, staff will scan or photograph your items for free and give you a copy on a CD or DVD.
That day from 3-5 p.m., drop by the Midtown Block Party at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library. Celebrate the beginning of summer with the whole family by joining the neighborhood, library staff and community organizations for music, refreshments and games.
There’s more:
- Wednesday and Thursday, it’s Toucan Jam: A World of Music. In this Summer Reading Program for kids birth to fifth grade, Toucan Jam will entertain with puppets, stories, songs and music played on their exotic instruments. Shows are Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Strafford Elementary School, 11 a.m. at Fair Grove Elementary and 2 p.m. at the Brentwood Branch Library; and Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Willard Recreation Center and 1 and 2 p.m. at the Library Center.
- On Friday, Jerry Stokes, longtime staff member at Lawrence Photo & Video, shares his tips on “How to Take Great Travel Photos Anywhere” with today’s digital cameras at 10 a.m. in the Library Station Santa Fe Room.
- At 1:30 p.m. that day in the Library Center Harrison Room, teens in grades 6-12 can meet author Lisa Schroeder via Skype. She wrote “I Heart You, You Haunt Me,” “Chasing Brooklyn,” and the upcoming “The Day Before.”
- From 2-4 p.m. (come-and-go) in the Library Station Frisco Room, all ages will enjoy “Around the World with Flat Stanley.” Get a passport, go on a scavenger hunt to find Flat Stanley and make some flat crafts.
