Record a Story for Your Preschooler at ‘Family Voices Party’ October 15 at Brentwood Branch Library

Parents or grandparents of children under age 5 are invited to record a short
children’s storybook on a free CD during the Family Voices Party from 2-4 p.m.
Saturday, October 15, at the Brentwood Branch Library, 2214 Brentwood Blvd.
The event is free. All families with preschoolers are invited to take part in the
children’s crafts, games and refreshments while local celebrities read aloud from
favorite children’s books.
During that time, adults will have the opportunity to read aloud from a children’s
book. They will be recorded by library staff member, and the recording will be added to
a master CD that already includes more than 25 other stories recorded by area
celebrities including nationally known author, poet and Springfield resident
David Harrison.
Adults who record a story will receive the free CD during that visit, and
children under age 5 will get a free book through the Family Voices project.
Family Voices is a nonprofit, community effort to encourage reading to children
from birth to age 5 to help them develop vocabulary, reading skills and a love of
books. The project has already recorded more than 100 parents or family members
reading a storybook to their preschool-age child.
To continue providing free books for the preschoolers, Barnes & Noble is
conducting a Book Drive now through October 26. During this period, Barnes & Noble
will display books that Family Voices needs, and customers are invited to purchase
the book at donate it to Family Voices during checkout.

• October 22, Family Voices Recording Party, 1-4 p.m. at Barnes & Noble with celebrity readers for Story Time, music and songs by Judy Domeny, Missouri State University mascot Boomer, several coaches and players.Parents or guardians will have another opportunity to record a story for a child under age 5. Adults who record a story will go home with the free CD and preschoolers get a free book.
October 22 also kicks off a Family Voices Book Fair through October 26. All sales at Barnes & Noble that day with a Book Fair voucher will go to building the Barnes & Noble contribution to Family Voices.
Family Voices is an independent committee of literacy advocates whose
members represent Drury University, Springfield Public Schools, Springfield-Greene
County Libraries, Parents as Teachers and community leaders. The project is
sponsored by Drury’s School of Education and Child Development and chaired by its
poet laureate David Harrison.
