Survey Results Help Us Help You; Family Voices Recording Session Oct. 15

October 8, 2011 — Library computers and our free, high-speed Internet connection are critical for customers, as many told us in the recent IMPACT Survey conducted online through the library website.

The survey and results, by the University of Washington in Seattle, show libraries how their communities use library computers and Internet connection so we can respond to people’s needs. Staff is analyzing the results, but at least one thing tells us we’re on the right track in always seeking funds to provide more and better computers in the 10 branches.

Of the 165 survey respondents, 76 percent said they used a library computer or their own computer to access the Internet in the past 12 months.

Two recent grants are helping us help you. The library received a $13,079 grant and a $4,360 library match to install another self-checkout station and replace 13 public computers at the Park Central Branch Library.

We also go $9,235, with a $3,153 library match, for a self-checkout station, a laptop for programming and to replace eight public computers at the Fair Grove Branch Library.

Both grant projects are supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

Preschoolers love to hear Mom or Dad’s voice reading a favorite storybook. Now parents can record a storybook on a free CD and play it anytime by visiting the Family Voices Party from 2-4 p.m. Saturday (OCT 15) at the Brentwood Branch Library.

Enjoy children’s games, crafts and refreshments. Local celebrities will read aloud from favorite storybooks, while parents of children under age 5 can record a storybook. It will be added to a master CD that includes stories read by local celebrities. Adults who record a story will receive the free CD that day, and the preschooler will get a free book.

The library is a Family Voices project partner, encouraging to children from birth to age 5 to help them develop reading skills.

To continue providing the free books, Barnes & Noble has a Book Drive through Oct. 26. Buy a book from the Family Voices store display and donate it to Family Voices during checkout.
