Go Green with the Library: Sign Up for Email Notifications, Shred Documents

November 9, 2011 — Patrons are invited to help the library district cut down on paper use by signing up to receive email notices of book due dates, “holds” and overdue reminders.

The library’s campaign to curtail paper use coincides with other area efforts for National Recycling Day, Nov. 15.

That day, the public is also invited to a Shredding Event by Edco Group, Inc. from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the parking lot of the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave.

Patrons can deposit documents they want securely destroyed into one of Edco’s locked bins. The bin will be taken to Edco’s main shredder at its Springfield headquarters for shredding, said Edco representative John Strickland.

On any given day, 17,000 library patrons have “holds” placed on books and other materials ready for pickup. About 6,000 of them are notified by mail or by telephone – a step that takes time, money and a good deal of paper.

Throughout November, the library encourages patrons who haven’t already done so to sign up for email notifications of their holds, due dates and “overdue” reminders.
Not only is it “green,” but email notices are also the most reliable and fastest method to receive library alerts.

To sign up, just give your email address to a librarian at the checkout desk of any branch library, or log on to your account at thelibrary.org/myaccount to add or update your email address.
