Beat Winter Break Boredom with Library Movies, Crafts and Teen Nights

December 16, 2011 — Children, ‘tweens and teens can always find something fun to do at the Library during their winter break between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The programs are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, December 28 

  • Big Kid Storytime, 11 a.m. in the Library Station Frisco Room, grades K-5. Remember how fun it was to visit the library for storytime when you were a preschooler? You're never too old for storytime. We'll read stories, sing songs, play games and make crafts tailored to the school-aged set.
  • Muppet Movie Marathon, 1 p.m., Brentwood Branch meeting room, for all ages.
    Stop by and watch your favorite Muppet adventures and learn how to make you own Muppet. "The Muppet Movie," rated G.
  • Winter Break “Break,” 2-4 p.m. Library Center meeting room B, grades 6-12. Winter vacation a little too boring? Need a break? Hang out at the Library to watch a movie, rated PG-13 or under, play some video games, hang out with friends or just to get out of the house!
  • Playing in a Winter Wonderland, 2 p.m. Library Center auditorium, for grades K-5. Frolic and play with wacky, wintery games and "Tacky the Penguin."

  • Every Wednesday 'Tweens and Teens, 3-5 p.m., Strafford Branch, ‘tween and teen activities for grades 5-12
  • Every Wednesday ‘Tweens and Teens, 3 p.m. Fair Grove Branch, ‘tween and teen activities for grades 5-12

Thursday, December 29

  • Winter Break Crafternoon, 1-5 p.m. Library Station Story Hour Room, all ages. Beat winter break boredom with hands-on crafts. Crafts and activities will be set up all afternoon, so stay as long as you like!
  • Muppet Movie Marathon, 1 p.m. Brentwood Branch, for all ages. Stop by and watch your favorite Muppet adventures and learn how to make you own Muppet. "The Great Muppet Caper," rated G.
  • Winter Break Movie Matinee, 2 p.m. Library Center auditorium, all ages. Join us for a movie on the big screen. "Monsters, Inc.," rated G.
  • Christmas with the Polar Express, 2-4:30 p.m., Republic Branch, grades K-5. Keep the Christmas fun going with Polar Express activities, snacks and the movie, rated G.
  • Plastic Fusion, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Brentwood Branch meeting room, grades 6-12. Learn how to recycle old plastic bags by fusing them together with heat and turn your new material into a purse, a wallet, a bracelet -- the sky’s the limit!

Friday, December 30

  • Winter Break Movie Matinee, 2 p.m. Library Center auditorium, for all ages. Join us for a movie on the big screen. "Tangled," rated PG.
  • Take Home Spa, 2-4 p.m. Library Center meeting room B, grades 6-12. Get ready for New Year’s Eve with some new, homemade spa treats to take home and enjoy. Make lip gloss, sugar scrub and glitter gel for a fancy new you! Materials will be provided. Registration starts December 12; call 882-0714.

Friday, December 30

  • Teen Friday Nights, 6-8 p.m. Library Station Santa Fe Room. If it's Friday night, there is something going on at the Station just for teens. Stop in for games, crafts, and special events.

Saturday, December 31

  • New Year's Eve First Night at Park Central Branch. The Library on the Square will remain open until 10 p.m. as part of Springfield’s First Night family festivities.

All other library branches will close at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 31. All branches will be closed Sunday, January 1 and Monday, January 2. All library branches and the Mobile Library will operate normal hours on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
