Get E-reader Help, Celebrate "The Hunger Games" and Enjoy Live Bluegrass Music at the Library

March 9, 2012 — Our next series of e-reader help sessions begins Thursday, March 15, with an 11 a.m. class at the Brentwood Branch Library. Staff will walk through the process of setting up your e-reader or other device to download books free from the Library, and help troubleshoot any issues you’re having. Everyone is welcome, and more sessions are planned. Check Bookends for the schedule, or go to http://thelibrary.org/programs/documents/ereader.pdf

As a follow-up to a recent column about e-book pricing putting a squeeze on libraries, here’s the latest from Random House publishers. As of result of the company’s new pricing structure, Random House e-books will cost two or more times higher than the print version. Here’s just one example: A $25.95 print copy of “The Dressmaker: A Novel” by Kate Alcott will cost $77.85 in e-book format.

Now for the good news…Pottermore, the Harry Potter e-books site, entered into an exclusive e-book and digital audiobook distribution agreement that will make them available for public and school library lending for the first time. The drawback is each e-book has a five-year expiration. When they become available, the Library will order a copy of each and test the waters.

If you haven’t heard of “The Hunger Games” book series, ask a teen or young adult – and a growing number of adults. It’s a haunting, futuristic tale that will be released as a movie in theaters March 23. Today begins a 12-day countdown to the movie release with library programs geared for mostly for ‘tweens and teens.

The programs involve games of skill and Hunger Games knowledge, with a lot of fun thrown in. There is also a real food drive, “Hunger is Not a Game,” sponsored by the Library, Ozarks Food Harvest and the Wehrenberg Campbell 16 Cine. When teens donate non-perishable food at any of the library branches or Mobile Library, they get a chance to win a free movie pass, posters and more. To learn details and see eerie “daily news” reports from the Capitol, go to thelibrary.org/hungergames.

Don’t miss today’s Sunday Concert Series at 2 p.m. at the Library Center. All ages are invited to hear WHOgrass. The Buffalo-based, hard-driving bluegrass band will perform originals, bluegrass classics, rock ‘n roll and Gershwin. The concert is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
